From Genesis to Esther
How Torah forges our identity through the stories it tells - and doesn't tell
Why does the Torah preserve certain stories and not others? Why do we know Sarah laughed, Yosef cried, the copper snake healed, but whole eras and towering figures are left unrecorded? And why did Esther — a story without revealed miracles — become the final book of our sacred canon?
In this class, we explore the Torah’s selection process: the kabbalah of a story, what makes a story “Torah,” how these narratives shape Jewish identity, and how they are the emotional and spiritual blueprint for our lives today.
Class 2
Behind the Mask
Meet the Purim characters: their histories,
their psyches and their souls
Who were Esther and Mordechai before they entered the palace? What ancient roots shaped Haman’s hatred? Why does the Torah hint to Esther through “Anochi hastir astir” - “I will surely hide My face”? And what is the deeper meaning behind Mordechai’s name linked to the anointing oil in the Holy Temple in Jerusalem?
In this class, we uncover the historical, psychological, and mystical backgrounds of the Purim characters — revealing where they come from, what they represent, and how their spiritual origins illuminate this forever holiday of Purim and the Megillah.
Oh…and why we remember Charvona for good.
